A Little Something about Rich Lanes...

After obtaining my Masters of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Virginia in the early 1980s I started my post-college life as a Mechanical Engineer with General Dynamics Space Systems Division.  My job was to integrate the requirements of the Fluid & Mechanical systems into operational requirements for the software engineers.  Our project was integrating the Centaur upper stage (used for most of the interplanetary space missions) into the Space Shuttle's cargo bay.  We were to be the next Challenger mission after the accident.  Because of my knowledge, NASA entertained the idea of me to be the Mission Specialist for that next flight.

After the Challenger disaster, everything at GD changed and they sold their Space Systems Division to Martin Marietta.  I DID NOT want to move to Denver…  So on July 13, 1993, I was informed that our entire division in San Diego was being laid off and I would be without a job in 60 days.  After 5 hours of thought and brainstorming with some friends I thought back on the number of times I was treated poorly by Mortgage Loan Officers for my home purchases and refis.  Most of the loan officers I had dealt with all came across as pompous jerks who only cared about their commissions.

I decided to take my engineering skills and apply that to helping buyers and those needing refis, primarily as a Mortgage Broker with the goal of making EVERYONE's experience with me a pleasant one.  I quickly obtained my license and had commissions coming in before I left GD almost 30 years ago.  I strive to avoid confusion and to make sure that everyone knows all of their options to make the decisions best for them, not me. 

After working as a loan officer for a year I obtained my Brokers License and started my own company which I maintained from 1994 thru the end of 2009.  From 1998 thru 2000 I was President of the San Diego Association of Mortgage Brokers.  After the mortgage meltdown in 2008-2009, the rules, tasks, and time needed to keep my own business running and lender approvals current were overwhelming.  In Jan 2010 I joined what is now known as C2 Financial Corp and have enjoyed being part of this incredible team for the past many years!  With the pricing incentives, 100+ available lenders, and incredible support I could not be happier.

As time moved on many of my mortgage clients have begged me to handle their real estate as well.  Although this has not my primary focus I do work as a Realtor mostly helping buyers and some sellers but ONLY for clients who have come to me directly and NEVER if there is another Realtor in any part of their referral chain to me.  I always make sure my clients stick with their Realtor of record and will never take real estate business from the agents who send their business to me.  My ethics are beyond reproach.

I have been happily married to my incredible wife Melanie for 21 years.  We have 1 son Rob who is a naval officer with his sweet wife Justine and grandson Rafael.
